Sistema de educación

The education system in Australia and Singapore

The school year begins in end February and runs through early December. The year is divided into four terms, with a short break between each term, and a month long summer

Compulsory Education

Elective Education

Primary School [Ages 6 to 12]

  • 6 years
  • Years are called "Grades"
  • Curriculum is nationalised across the country
  • Students learn English, math, science and languages

Students study from Grades 1 to 6 without examinations, though their abilities are tested at key points. The curriculum is nationalised across Australia with students learning core subjects such as English, maths and science, as well as social studies and physical education.

Secondary School [Ages 12 to 16]

  • 4 years
  • Grades 7 to 10
  • Students choose an academic or vocational path
  • All students prepare for and sit for their School Certificate (Australia) or N-Level (Singapore) exams

Students begin secondary school at Grade 7, usually at the age of 12 or 13. Secondary school is compulsory for four years, during which students gain a deeper understanding of their primary school subjects or begin taking vocational subjects that prepare them for a career. At the end of Grade 10, students sit their School Certificate or N-Level examinations. They can choose to leave school and enter the workforce, attend a vocational school or continue studying for two more years to complete a Year 12 Certificate or O-Levels (Singapore) which is required for university studies.

Year 12 Certificate [Ages 16 to 18]

  • 2 years
  • Students follow academic subjects to prepare for university entrance
  • In the second year, students take Year 12 Certificate (Australia) or O-Level exams (Singapore)

Bachelors Degrees [Ages 18+]

  • 3 to 5 years
  • Years are divided into three terms
  • Students take course subjects in their degree area, and sit for final exams
  • A bachelor's degree is awarded upon completionStudents who do well in their 3 year Bachelors degree can opt to study for one more year and earn an Honours degree

Successfully completing these qualifies students to enroll at university. Students usually undertake a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree programme for three years, although some degrees take four to five years to complete. University entrance requirements for international students usually include demonstrated fluency in English and the equivalent of the Year 12 Certificate or O-Level exams from their own country. Alternatively, international students can attend EF International Academy and progress directly to a degree programme at university.

Graduate School [Ages 21+]

  • 1 to 2 years
  • Students must complete coursework, write a masters thesis and sit for final exams
  • A masters degree or MBA is awarded upon completion
  • Masters students can continue studying for a doctoral or PhD degree

Postgraduate programmes are offered in Australia and Singapore for Masters Degrees in the Arts (MA), Sciences (MSc), Business Administration (MBA) and Doctorate Degrees (PhD). Masters programmes generally follow a three or four year Bachelors degree and last for either one or two years. Doctorate programmes, however usually require four to five years of additional advanced study. MBA degrees generally require one to two years and candidates will need at least two years managerial level work experience in addition to a Bachelors Degree. The entrance requirements for international students is normally an English level of at least IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 550 PBT.
